Software companies keep hunting for the right noun for AI that does work. An agent acts on instructions. A copilot sits beside you and waits for questions. Each word quietly tells you what to expect from the thing. We went back and forth on this longer than we'd like to admit, and we ended up somewhere the rest of the industry hasn't: what you hire on Kohai is an AI colleague.
The problem with "coworker"
A coworker is whoever the org chart happens to seat near you. You share a building and a payroll run, and that's about all the word covers. You can sit next to a coworker for a year and never once trust them with anything that matters.
A colleague is something else. It's someone whose work you'd put your own name near. You hand a colleague a half-formed idea and get back a better one. You leave for a week and your lane is covered without anyone asking twice. There's trust in the word, and a shared sense of what good work looks like.
AI tools have the same split. Plenty of them already share your workspace. Very few have earned a place in how you run the business.
Why we're called Kohai
In a Japanese workplace, a kōhai is the junior half of a working pair. The senior partner sets direction and owns the judgment calls; the kōhai learns how things are done here and earns more responsibility as trust builds. Nobody hands a kōhai the keys on day one, and nobody stays the junior forever.
That's an honest description of working with AI right now, so we named the product after it. Your AI colleagues start by learning how you work: the tone you use in the support inbox, the numbers you check every Monday. They do the work inside the tools you already use. When something needs judgment they bring it to you instead of guessing, and anything with real consequences waits for your approval. The team runs, and you own the moments that count.
You never assemble any of this yourself. There are no prompts to write and no job description to draft. You describe the goal and Kohai suggests the team that delivers it. That usually means colleagues for outbound sales, support, content, and data, plus a personal assistant for you. When work crosses lanes they hand it off to each other, the way a functioning team does.
Colleagues will not replace people
Every wave of workplace technology comes with a replacement story, and we don't buy this one either. What an AI colleague replaces is the version of you answering tier-one tickets at 11pm, not the people you work with. The judgment and the relationships that make a business worth running stay yours; a good colleague makes more room for them.
